Check everyaddress beforeit bounces.
Sortwell checks each address the way a mail server would: syntax, domain, MX records and a live SMTP handshake that hangs up before anything is sent. Paste a list or upload a CSV and get back what's safe to send.
Every address crosses the stamping desk once, and leaves with a verdict.
Six checks, in the order a mail server cares about.
Each address travels the same route and comes back with a status, a score from 0 to 100, a safe-to-send answer and the mail server's own reply.
Syntax
Confirms the address follows the rules mail software expects: one @ sign, no spaces, a real domain extension.
maya@@northwind.ioInvalid formatDomain & MX
Looks up the domain's DNS records to confirm it exists and publishes a mail server that accepts mail.
[email protected]Domain doesn't existSMTP handshake
Opens a live connection to the mail server and asks about this exact mailbox, then hangs up before any message is sent.
[email protected]Server said 5.1.3Catch-all
Spots domains that say yes to every address. The mailbox might exist, so it goes to your review pile instead of being guessed.
[email protected]Catch-all, score 55Disposable
Matches the domain against a continuously updated list of temporary inbox providers. Those inboxes are gone within the hour.
[email protected]DisposableRole accounts & spam traps
Flags shared inboxes like info@ and sales@, plus known spam traps and typo traps that quietly damage your sender reputation.
[email protected]Typo trap
Every bounce tells inbox providers you don't know who you're writing to. Collect enough of them and your next campaign lands in spam, even for the people who wanted it.
Upload a CSV. Get back three piles.
Drop in a spreadsheet with any number of columns. Sortwell finds the email column, removes duplicates and sorts every address into safe to send, review or remove.
- Your original columns stay exactly as they were
- Status, score and the mail server's reply on every row
- Download everything, or only what's safe to send
The small things that make a list clean.
Six details that come with every verification, whether you check one address or fifty thousand.

The server's own words
Every result keeps the mail server's raw reply, so you can see exactly why.
- API
Same checks in your app
Call the API from a signup form and stop bad addresses at the door.

Questions people ask before uploading.
Do you send an email to check an address?
No. Sortwell connects to the receiving mail server, asks whether the mailbox exists and disconnects before any message is sent. The person on the other end never sees anything.
What do the three piles mean?
Safe to send holds addresses the mail server confirmed. Review holds catch-all domains and servers that gave an uncertain answer. Remove holds invalid addresses, disposable inboxes and spam traps.
What's a catch-all domain?
Some companies set up their mail server to accept mail for any address on the domain, so the server can't tell us whether one specific mailbox exists. We mark those as catch-all and put them in Review rather than guessing.
What's a spam trap?
An address that exists to catch senders with poor list hygiene. Some are abandoned inboxes, others sit on typo domains like gmial.com. Mailing one can get your domain blocklisted, so they always go in Remove.
Am I charged for invalid addresses?
Yes. Every address that gets a result uses one credit, whatever the result. Duplicates and rows without an email address are skipped before verification and never charged.
Which files can I upload?
CSV, TSV and plain text files. Commas, semicolons and tabs are all detected automatically. You can also paste a list straight into the dashboard in any format.
